I didn’t do it but have heard stories of similar problems in races inaugurating HK tunnels—the Western Harbour Crossing I think…

Yes the mass events have their place—for average touristic runners like I was. My 1987 tour of the 5 NY boroughs I’ll never forget. But smaller races are of course more “personal.” A huge race that was organised really well was the half marathon opening the Oresond bridge from Denmark to Sweden in 2000. 100,000 runners taken by buses to the start and released in batches. No real crowding. I ran through the tunnel and over the bridge, did a reasonable time (in the first 5000), picked up my gear, had breakfast with a friend in Malmo and caught the bus back to beautiful Copenhagen. Great day❤️
